Build your connections. Explain your value. Show your work.

Looking for work, changing careers or helping someone who is? Use this five-part approach to focus your effort and keep moving.

## Five parts. Work on them together.

A conversation can reveal a skill gap and give you speaking practice. Acting on advice gives you something useful to bring back. Start where you need attention and keep the other parts moving.

## Connections

Build relationships around the work you want. Start with people doing the role, then relevant managers and recruiters. Ask a specific question, act on the advice and follow up.

## Communication

Practise explaining your experience clearly. Tailor your résumé, prepare relevant examples and talk through your decisions. Your communication improves by communicating.

## Skills

Show what you can do. Build a project, solve a problem or document a result that relates to your target role. Be ready to explain your contribution.

## Certifications

Choose credentials that matter for the work you want. Compare current job postings, then check the issuer’s requirements, cost and renewal commitments.

## Education

Connect your learning to a clear goal. Identify the knowledge or formal qualification you need, including any licence required to enter your field.

## Resources for your next move

Choose a resource that helps with the part of your search you are working on. The career and communication tools apply across fields; the technical resources focus on cybersecurity and technology.

## Understand the role

Map the work before choosing a credential.
- [NIST NICE Framework](https://www.nist.gov/itl/applied-cybersecurity/nice/nice-framework-resource-center/nice-framework-current-versions): Cybersecurity · Work roles and skills. ## Build your skills

Turn learning into work you can explain.
- [Microsoft Learn](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/training/): Technology · Self-paced learning. Find modules and learning paths for Microsoft technologies and career goals. Choose a relevant topic, work through it and apply what you learn in a small project.
- [PortSwigger Web Security Academy](https://portswigger.net/web-security): Application security · Free interactive labs. Practise web security in purpose-built labs. Keep notes on the vulnerability, your investigation and the fix so you can explain the work in an interview.

## Meet people. Practise speaking.

Make conversation part of your routine.
- [OWASP Local Chapters](https://owasp.org/chapters/): Application security · Community. Find local groups offering talks, training and opportunities to meet people in the field. Chapter meetings are free and open to members and non-members.
- [Toastmasters Club Finder](https://www.toastmasters.org/find-a-club): All fields · Communication practice. Find an in-person or online club that fits your schedule. Visit to practise speaking, listen to feedback and get more comfortable explaining your ideas.
